Frogger’s On The Hill Pizza, Wings & Deli – Onondaga Hill
Posted by pizzageek
It took a while to get here, but last-minute Christmas shopping finally took me into western Onondaga County. It was near lunch time, and as always, pizza was on my mind. It was one of those “The first pizza place I see is where I’ll stop” moments. I probably passed a few pizza locations without noticing, and I ended up at Frogger’s On The Hill Pizza, Wings & Deli. This Frogger’s is located near the upper entrance to OCC, on route 175. It’s a bit more rural than most pizza shops, although it is a highly travelled route, and there is a large student population nearby. There’s ample parking and lots of seating. I can’t tell for sure from internet searching, but there either was, or is another Frogger’s location in nearby Camillus.
Frogger’s is not a typical slice joint; a variety of other foods share the spotlight. Slice pies are kept in a glass case with rotating platforms, and mine was not reheated. I chose a pepperoni slice ($2.25 plus tax), which was 1/8th of a 16″ pie. I’d peg this as a medium thickness crust, about 1/2″ thick throughout. It was baked on a pan, resulting in a little fried dough taste and texture, with some shiny browned spots. It was generally somewhat moist and chewy, but still had a little crispness on the edge.
The sauce appeared to have mostly absorbed into the crust and cheese – I struggled to find any when I peeled back the cheese. I did find some spice flakes, and one little pocket of sauce did show some potential. There just wasn’t enough sauce to get a really good fix on how good it was. Cheese was applied in a proper amount for this thickness of crust, and was somewhat orange and oily. Regarding the pepperoni, I’d have to say it was spicier than average – a good thing for me, although not everyone’s preference. I’ve often observed that good pepperoni can save an otherwise mediocre pizza, and that was the case here.
Overall, there’s a lot of “chew” in this pizza, and it is easier to be satisfied with one of these slices than when you have a light and crispy thin slice. As I mentioned, the pepperoni saved it from total blandness. My biggest recommendation would be to use a little more sauce, so that you could actually taste it. One test of pizza goodness is to think “How far out of my way would I go to get a slice of this?” In this case, I might stop if I was already going by, but I don’t think I’d make any special effort for it. The Pizza Geek gives Frogger’s pizza a generally average rating of 3 out of 5 slices.
Summary – Pros: tasty, bold pepperoni. Cons: scant sauce, chewy, ordinary.

Velasko Pizzeria is close by and has been around Onondaga Hill for a lot longer than these guys…. Check them out http://www.velaskopizzeria.com. They even deliver to O.C.C.!!!
Absolutely delicious with a great variety of food with a nice size serving. Best pizza place I’ve EVER eaten at!!!
Froggers has been in camillus at least my whole life, the old man shut down for a bit and the daughter runs it now at its current location on the hill. The pizza might not be the best, but this place has the BEST ranch dipping sauce hands down…. ha ha ha and i do make special trips for that.
Has really good Wednesday deals. $6.99 for large cheese +$1.50 for toppings. My classmates and I used to order it for class every lab day. Good greasy pizza. I’ve had better, but for the price it’s great pizza.
