New York Pizzeria, Weedsport

If you Google “New York Pizzeria,” you’ll find a great many of them. It may be one of the more common names for pizza shops, and not just in NY State. It isn’t clear to me which of them may be related, if at all. I suppose I could interrogate the counter help to get answers to these questions, but the questions often don’t arise until I’m home, writing the review. At any rate, I recently found myself driving through Weedsport while hungry, and with New York Pizzeria right in front of me.

There were several pizzas at the front counter – it seemed a little strange because you could walk right up to the counter, with no glass or partition between you and the goodies. I selected my “default” cheese slice, $2.04 including tax for a pretty good sized slice from a 20″ pizza.

This thin crust had a crispy bottom that cracked when folded, and a moderate amount of crisp in the rim. However, the rim seemed just a bit undercooked, both in appearance and taste. It did not seem unique to the cheese pizza – the other slice pizzas looked similar. On the other hand, the underside had some char (different than browning), which generally takes a rather hot oven, so I don’t know how to explain the underdone rim.

The welcome surprise on this pizza was the excellent sauce. It was bright red, with a bright, fresh tomato taste, light spice load, and it wasn’t salty. A small number of spice flakes were visible under the cheese. Cheese was the common, somewhat oily Grande cheese, in just the right amount.

Overall, the biggest problems are the oily cheese, and undercooked rim. Even so, this was a very good, tasty slice, and I give it a Pizza Geek rating of 4 out of 5 slices.

Summary – Pros: tasty sauce, mostly good crust. Cons: oily Grande cheese, rim of crust undercooked.
